We’ve fallen in love with Gisele Scanlon’s second book, The Goddess Experience! Packed with a 1001 mirco-pleasures that will take you from breakfast to bedtime with a smile, we can’t put it down. Full of sartorial tips and gorgeous illustrations, ours is packed with post it notes that have ‘do this’ and ‘check this out’ scrawled all over them.
With so many inspiring tips on travel, fashion and beauty – from the lovely Gisele herself, and all the designers, celebrities and experts who have let her into their lives – you’re guaranteed to find lots of little experiences that will make you smile.
What we adore about this book is that it makes you remember that the little things in life – from the perfect cup of tea to painting your nails just the right shade – can make you just as happy as the bigger things! Luckily, for Gisele, that includes bonding over shoes with Nicholas Kirkwood, discovering the backstage secrets of fashion heavyweights such as Vivienne Westowood, hunting out the best boutiques in Berlin and so many more exciting things that you should get hold of her book and read it cover to cover.
Here, Gisèle shares her top ten Goddess Experiences:
An impressive ring … More often then not it’s the smallest things that make the largest style contribution and bring the most pleasure. I get compliments on my chunky cocktail rings all the time and even though you might think I’m sporting a MAJOR piece of ice, the ring that I get the most compliments on cost me £8 at Topshop.
Nice pens and paper to handwrite letters … When Vivienne Westwood’s letter arrived written in two-tone pink ink it was thrilling. I love pens (my favourite are Rotring for my drawings), graphite pencils, pen sops, new paper, crests, embossed letterheads, notebooks all booky and leathery and I love the French word for pen ‘stylo.’
Sparkly eyes … Make-up artists backstage at Paris fashion week were using this micro-trick to wake up eyes … hold your eyelash curler as close to the base of your lash as you can bear. Then squeeze just once for maximum effect.
A really nice vintage headpiece … I’ll have a lace band teaming with flowers and jet beads and feathers and all hand finished like magic, purleeeese. Cos that’s how I roll. Lovely feeling that, when you get to choose. That’s customization at its most basic and a headband like this one made for Courtney Love is the ultimate Vintage treat.
Running in the park … It’s easy, anyone can do it, it costs very little and it makes my pins look great in my Kate Moss for Topshop jeans.
Fragrance that smells like a place … The leathery scent of books bound in an ancient library, the fresh smell of a day at the beach, the scent of Japanese temples, if green were a smell, wouldn’t it be a walk in the woods on a damp spring evening?
Lingerie … Candy coloured bra straps, delicate lace, the perfect white vest top, light as air pyjamas. Totally mint!
New shooooooos … Is there anything more exciting than trying on, buying, bringing home and breaking in beautiful new shoes? To really enjoy your first time out in new shoes, wear with a thick pair of socks around the house first to stretch the leather. Alternatively if the leather is stiff on the heel, poke the handle of a hairbrush against it on the inside of the shoes and it softens it up.
Scented sleeves … Wool (cashmere, merino, lamb’s) is particularly nice when it absorbs your favourite perfume. It’s a beautiful surprise to be ambushed by your favourite scent as go about your day.
Writing Happy Lists … Scribbling like mad in my notebook, little things that make me happy …things like flipping my pillow over in the morning to the cool side, the smell of bonfires and open fires, clouds, shoes and bedside lamps. All EPIC!
