When you walked into the Alexander Wang show, you were greeted with two things: stares from every fashion tribe, and beats from Lil Kim – her music pumped through New York's Pier 57 before the show started. And okay, there were some '90s hip hop connections, especially in the leather puffy parkas that looked like the famous North Face jackets of Sean Combs and Biggy Smalls back in the day. But as front-row guest Anna Wintour says (she sat close to singer Santigold and rap duo Die Antwoord), fashion should always move forward, and Wang did that with layers of Perspex and plastic where cotton undershirts used to be, and a long, asymmetrical sweep of a leather t-shirt.

That's not to say one key thing about the show wasn't retro in the most amazing way possible: Wang reprised his show with '90s legends like Shalom Harlow and Gisele walking the runway in his newest designs. You'd think the applause would have been deafening, but everyone was too busy camera-phoning and Tweeting to drown out Lil' Kim..
