We like to find out what pieces make the Topshop girls tick so today we caught up with Laura Harmes-Heywood, who is a Personal Shopper in our Knightsbridge store. We asked Laura for her expert tips, tricks and style secrets, as well as finding out what it's like working everyday as one of our expert Personal Shoppers.

How did you become a Personal Shopper at Topshop?

I have been with Topshop for over 5 years, as a shopper since we launched the service and previously as a Style Advisor in my Uni town of Manchester. My degree is in English and American Literature and I spent a large part of this time pursuing fashion journalism interests – fashion editing the student paper and beginning work for Dazed and Confused in my final year. A couple of years later I heard about the Topshop position and couldn’t say no – it’s a dream role!

What do you love about your job?

The relationship I have with my regular clients, the pride I feel in the credibility of the brand, getting to work with such fantastic, exciting and ever changing product every day. The incredible opportunities and experiences the role has afforded me.

How would you describe your style?

Eclectic and very instinctual – I see a piece and know instantly that it will work for me. I have a strong bohemian influence, inspired by my mother, and I'm not afraid to make a bold statement. I live in silk and natural fabrics and enjoy movement and texture

Who are your fashion icons?

Mostly women who are keen to express themselves and do something different…60’s/70’s era Anita Pallenberg, Daphne Guinness, Anna Dello Russo, Iris Apfel. The effortlessness of Lou Doillon.

Which is your current favourite Topshop collection and why?

Native. The trend cleverly creates a relaxed/bohemian version of opulence…whilst still looking modern. Lots of embellishment, layering texture and movement with global inspirations.

What are your favourite key pieces for SS12 season?

An amazing maxi dress worn with a leather jacket and ankle boots.  Any of our studded shoulder jumpers, especially in ombre dye…I’ll wear them when the sun goes down at a festival and with silk shorts to offset the studs. Boutique leather jackets – everyone needs one in their life and any statement wedge shoes.

What piece do you always come back to, season after season?

A good jacket, or outerwear in general. I am borderline obsessed, my wardrobe is heaving with them – leathers, furs, vintage trophy jackets and silk kimonos, lots of tassled numbers, feathered capes…a good outerwear piece completes an outfit.

What’s the style rule you live by?

If a piece or an outfit doesn’t feel good it won’t work with and for you. Clothes speak a lot about who we are so take ownership of that and enjoy expressing yourself.

What’s your first memory of Topshop?

A beautiful dress that bought in 1999 and it’s still in my wardrobe now. Baby blue with a little heart print and broderie anglaise lace trim. The label says ‘Topshop Designer Limited Edition’ – old school! Every time I look at it makes me smile; it has seen some very good times.

Where’s your favourite place to go shopping where you live?

I live in Brick Lane so the vintage shops are right around the corner.

Why should someone book a personal shopping appointment with you?

Once you try it there will be no going back. I can make shopping, getting dressed, and your understanding of your wardrobe easy.

What’s great about the personal shopping service?

It’s the perfect way to shop. Personal Shopper appointments are tailored to your every need and we give clients access to all the latest product and insider knowledge.

If you'd love to book a complimentary appointment with one of our Personal Shoppers in the UK or US, be sure to take a look at our service and don't hesistate to book! It really will change the way you shop…
