Unpredictable weather aside, it seemed the ‘Great British Summer’ couldn’t get any better after Friday’s Olympic Ceremony, (the Queen as a Bond Girl, Mr Bean, not to mention David Beckham driving a speedboat down the Thames) but then we discovered that Camden’s Roundhouse had brought the spirit of the seaside to NW1…

London – we officially heart you.

Boasting 150 tonnes of sand, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d clicked your fingers and woken up in Barcelona – but no, standing beneath your (now sandy) pedicured toes is in fact the Roundhouse’s 900 square metre roof terrace, aka. Camden Beach.

Lounge lovers can soak up the rays (positive thinking) from the novelty of a deckchair, while sipping on a frozen margarita courtesy of Jimmy’s Margarita shack. For those of a more energetic persuasion, there’s ping-pong, boules and badminton, plus live screenings of all the Olympic highlights to make sure you don’t miss any of this summer’s sporting action.

If you’re feeling peckish, the Beach Bar, Hey Lolly! and Grill tiki hut have everything from steaks, burgers and fresh fish to frozen yoghurt, ice-lollies and sweets. And if it rains? No problem! They’ve got an indoor garden to provide the perfect shelter.

So go on, grab your sunnies and hit Camden beach! We must warn you though, there’s serious danger of getting the first line of Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ in your head the whole time you’re there (such was the case for us, anyway).

Camden beach is open from 11am-11pm from now until Friday 24th August, and the best part of all? It’s absolutely free!
