Allow us to introduce Brighton’s brightest, The Special K’s

The five piece opened the show for Jessie J’s ‘Live in London’ concert at Camden’s Roundhouse last weekend and it’s safe to say, we were more than impressed.

Granted, when Mat, Darren, Tom, Howard and Alex stepped out on stage we already knew we were in for something special (forgive the pun) – if you’re there to support one of the biggest stars on the UK pop scene then surely that’s a given?

But of course, it’s no mean feat – Jessie J’s fan base spans from teeny boppers to the middle aged and it was quite clear when you cast your eye over the crowd that most of them were there in anticipation of the lady herself (who, may we add, looked incredible in a vintage sequin Vivienne Westwood number and neon trainers) and yet, the Special K’s more than rose to the occasion – they came, they played and they conquered.

In terms of classifying their sound – it’s tempting to simply opt for ‘Electro-pop’, thanks to the boys’ floppy-haired likeability factor and penchant for a synthesiser, but add to that lead singer Howard’s flawless falsetto, their collective, infectious energy and live-music ethic and you’re left with a ‘funky rock fusion’ that could equally fill Wembley Arena as much as it would a club in Ibiza. (If it helps, they’ve been likened to Friendly Fires on numerous occasions!)

Our favourite tunes? Evil Woman and their latest single, ‘New Ways‘, which, along with the video, is a subtle stroke of genius when it comes to enticing a female audience. Talented boys and puppies? It’s a match made in heaven.

Watch it here and tell us what you think!
