Ready for another glimpse into the life of a Topshop HQ girl? This month we caught up with Jessica Wright, Personal Shopping Assistant Manager at our Oxford Circus London Flagship to talk about her amazing job, London Fashion Week and the ultimate pieces to covet this season…
How did you become a Personal Shopper at Topshop?
I studied Fashion Design briefly but it didn’t take me long to figure out that it was the finished product that interested me more than designing and constructing it. Both my parents are very creative; my dad was in the music industry for years and my mum had her own boutique. I used to sit in her shop for hours watching how she displayed everything and styled herself – they are both a huge inspiration to me. In my early 20s I tried to gain as much experience as I could to see how the industry worked and where I could see myself settling and then one day I walked in to Topshop and saw the Style Advisor Private Area (that’s what it was called at the time) and the cool girls walking in and out of it. I was with my mum on one of our many three hour shopping sessions at the weekend in Topshop and she said to me you’d be great at that. The next day I handed my CV in and I’ve been with Topshop Personal Shopping ever since. That was 7 years ago and I’m now part of the management team. It’s such a dream job and I’ve had the opportunity to work on so many great projects, both in the UK and internationally.
What do you love about your job?
My team of 16 personal shoppers and assistants are so amazing and talented, it’s inspiring to be surrounded by them everyday and of course our clients, they are so diverse and loyal. No two days are the same in Personal Shopping and getting new deliveries of amazing product everyday keeps it exciting. I’m addicted to the brand!
What’s great about the Personal Shopping service?
When you book an appointment the suite is fully prepared on your arrival with head-to-toe outfits – it’s a great time saver! The team will give you new styling ideas and will ensure you never miss the items that fly out of stock. We have amazing relationships with our regular clients; it really is the best way to shop.
Can you tell us about the ‘Big Wow’ appointment?
This is the perfect appointment to book if you’re in need of a ‘WOW’ outfit., whether for Fashion Week or a special occasion like a wedding or an event etc. Your personal shopper would prepare one of our suites for your arrival, full of head to toe outfits for you to try, including tons of accessories, shoes and bags. It almost feels like your own little boudoir in there and it’s the perfect time-saver when looking for that special outfit.
What will you be wearing to London Fashion Week this season?
My team, myself and in fact, the majority of our clients are desperate for the second drop of the Unique collection to hit the store on the 6th September, just in time for London Fashion Week. I’m sure I’ll be wearing a piece or two throughout the week, either the khaki military maxi dress with some killer ankle boots (with my vintage studded boot straps attached) or the over-sized biker jacket with some shorts and my favourite Topshop velvet western boots – depending on the great British weather of course!
Any tips on dressing for Fashion Week?
Anything goes at Fashion Week especially in London as people are constantly looking to our amazing street style for inspiration. I think it’s important to just make sure you choose to wear something that you love and feel great in, be individual and don’t just wear a trend head to toe. Personally, I love to mix old pieces with new.
What shows are you looking forward to seeing?
London Fashion Week is one of the busiest times for us in Personal Shopping so our priority is to accommodate as many clients as possible. Amazing products flood the store at this time of year, so we make sure our clients never miss out. I try and dash to as many shows as I can in between appointments and never miss the Topshop Unique show – it’s just effortlessly cool and the highlight of my Fashion Week! I love the party feel of Meadham Kirchhoff and always end up longing for everything by Mark Fast.
What do you have in your Fashion Week survival kit?
Coffee! I’m always armed with a vanilla soya latte and paracetamol, my By Terry Touch Expert Under-Eye Concealer and rose lip balm, a spritz of my Diptyque fragrance Tam Dao and my battered Topshop leather biker jacket. When I’m in need of a colour injection, I reach for my hot coral Vegas Volt lipstick by Mac (I’ve worn this colour for years!)
Who are your fashion icons?
My mum has taught me so much about styling she’s definitely an icon amongst my friends and I. Patti Smith, Farrah Fawcett, Debbie Harry are also great influences and I love Erin Wasson’s beachy, surfer-girl look. The Olsen’s are my go-to for hair and makeup.
What are your key pieces for the new season?
A casual military shirt, some Arson Flame Western Boots to wear with any dress or cut-off denim shorts and I can’t wait to get my hands on the elastic back playsuit, which I’ll layer with a vintage kimono and studded boots.
Do you have a piece that you always come back to season after season?
My biker jacket! It’s been with me through my entire 20s and now into my 30s – it’s seen some good times.
What’s your fashion weakness?
Ankle boots. I’m not really into girly shoes, instead I like to toughen up an outfit with a good pair of boots – I have so many pairs! My leather jacket collection is forever growing too and I have so many vintage band t-shirts, it’s crazy. I’ve got some amazing original ones handed down from my parents and I bid like mad on eBay for my Prince T-shirt from the Purple Rain tour – I’ve bought one from every concert I’ve ever been to, it’s tradition now.
Do you have a favourite Topshop Make Up product?
I love the look of pale matte skin with a berry-coloured lip but sadly it’s just not me! Instead, I go for a bronzed, dewy look with dark gritty eye make-up and a nude lip. My favourite Topshop products are Glow Highlighter in Polish, which I pop on my cheek bones and our Bronzer in Desert Sun – it’s coral, golden and gorgeous!
Where’s your favourite place to go shopping where you live?
My team and I shop all day everyday for our clients so I tend not to go shopping on my days off – I save this for holidays! I love to travel and some of my favourite pieces have come from trips to Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, NYC and LA. I do love to pop into Liberty’s on my lunch break though!
What would your best night out involve?
Grabbing a bite to eat in Brixton Market – there are some amazing little restaurants in there or I’m equally happy having a few cold beers with my friends and great music. I love taking a trip to Lucky 7’s in Notting Hill too with my sister.
Where do you like to relax on a Sunday where you live?
I live in Wimbledon and sometimes head to Cannizaro House with my boyfriend, it’s so beautiful there. Otherwise we might go to Richmond Park and sit outside the Roebuck pub – the view is amazing.
The Topshop Personal Shopping service is completely free of charge. Whether you need help finding the right outfit for a big event, want to revamp your wardrobe or just want a sneak peak at new pieces, simply call or email to make an appointment at one of our Personal Shopping stores.
