What… Huishan Zhang’s debut London Fashion Week presentation. The rising Chinese NEWGEN designer has been tipped by industry insiders as a one to watch and is a huge name in China already.
Where… Portico Show Space, Somerset House
Who… Our very own Creative Director Kate Phelan was at the show with Harriet Quick, the one-time Vogue editor whose new project LUXUP sponsored the show. Let’s not forget fashion favourite and Tank editor Caroline Issa, BFC’s Sarah Mower (and uber gorgeous assistant Jessica Bumpus) and Business of Fashion Imran Ahmed, who all cosied up on the white benches to see the debut take place.
The collection in 5 words… East-meets-West modern elegance.
What we loved… The expert skill and mashing of cultures. Zhang used Eastern-inspired prints, taken from pagodas and ancient birds and transferred them onto stunning dresses and trousers with precision. There’s no question this designer perfected his trade at Dior – his craftsmanship was unquestionable – with carefully sculpted dresses that broke traditional silhouettes, pinned waists and delicate fabric layering, not to mention his dab hand at crystal embroidery!
Playlist… Swooping and romantic! ‘Love Interruption’ by Jack White and Roberta Flack’s ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’.
Hero piece… A knee-length printed dress in mint green or midnight blue with lace inlays and a collar embellishment that could cut glass.
Hair loving… Sleek schoolgirl french plaits and a ponytail.
Beauty notes… Our favourite blush of the season: blue, green and oranges were swept across the models’ cheeks with a hint of glitter.
Inspired by… His rich Chinese cultural heritage and femininity.
