It’s easy to believe that fashion editorials are the stuff of magic – the clothes, the models, even the shine factor that radiates from every glossy page. But no, behind every photo-shoot, lies an incredibly talented team from the stylist and photographer to hair, make-up and all of the assistants in-between.

Always a riot, always creative to the extreme – here’s a little insight behind the scenes of our J.W.Anderson for Topshop shoot. Happy reading!

Location: Shoreditch Studios, East London on a typically British, rainy summer day.

We arrived on set to an atmosphere of cool, calm and considered concentration. Row upon row of J.W. Anderson props and accessories lined the studio, enticing our childlike tendencies to get over-excited at even the tiniest of oddities; pencils, brooches, roller skates, candy-striped JWA hard-boiled sweets – let’s just say we were already in heaven.

And then we saw the clothes – varsity jackets, pyjama-style paisley, kilts, tartan, Tim Burton-inspired motif sweaters, pinafores, Breton stripes, we could go on but the main point here is simple: we wanted it all and can’t wait until it arrives online and instore on September 14th.

Ever the dedicated designer, Jonathan was already set to work with stylist, Benjamin Bruno; picking out pieces from within the collection and arranging them on a white board on the floor. Together they used a jigsaw, collage technique to create each look, ready to dress the model of choice, Maria.

Just 18, Kansas-born Maria was the picture of fashion’s young, teenage dream. After a stint in hair and make-up, she came out glowing with a dewy, natural complexion, striking the perfect contrast to her smoky black eyes, defined brows and wet-look hair.

Despite several pairs of lovely loafers and  Chelsea boots, it was decided that Maria would go bare-foot, and thus began the shooting process. Between each shot, Jonathan and Benjamin would jump in to tweak a jacket collar or the flare of a skirt – showing their consistent eye for attention to detail.

The end result? An amazing catalogue of images, spotlighting all of our favourite J.W.Anderson pieces and starring our most loved team-member of the day, Vicky the Whippet (Jonathan’s live-in studio pet) – so cute!
