Peter Pilotto SS13

As a crisp morning broke over Bedford Square troupes of leggy girls made their way into the Topshop Showspace for the 7.30am call time. There was a surprising amount of calm backstage with coffee, pastries and plenty of fruit for the models to munch on whilst getting all dolled up. We overheard new face and show opener model, Michon Van As, chatting away about how she couldn’t live without her iPad and loved the Topshop Unique show yesterday! (Why, thank you Michon!)

Designer’s Christopher de Vos and Peter Pilotto’s rails of signature clashing prints and pattern heavy pieces caught our attention and we were intrigued to find out how the beauty and hair team would compliment these bold designs.

Stylist Anthony Turner, whose crafty hair-savvy hands are behind shoots for the likes of Self Service magazine and Emporio Armani, was behind the heavenly styled locks for this morning’s show. “The collection is inspired by Renaissance paintings, by cathedrals and religion,” said the stylist who was also behind Topshop Unique’s ss13 beautiful hair, “so we wanted to bring that into the hair in a subtle way. We wanted it to be angelic, so used mousse for a low ponytail, made a strong centre parting and the period, Renaissance nod, came from the hair being over the ears.” Tiny bits of hair also were pulled from the crown to create an almost Angelic halo that sat perfectly in tune with the designers’ otherwordly creations.

The gorgeous Lucia Pica took center stage on the make-up front to brief her team on the similarly ‘angelic’ look she was emulating for the show. “It’s all about the beautiful skin. An iridescent palette, warm cheeks and tones of browns around the eyes,” said Lucia, “everything else was simple, curled lashes, groomed eyebrows.” There was even a team of nail technicians who primed the girls toes and fingers in pale, glossy mushroom varnish to give the show an all over polish. Heavenly, indeed!

As for front of house – everyone looked a bit sleepy this morning! Suzy Menkes literally ran in and out of the venue while Jess Cartner-Morley from The Guardian gave us a warm “hello!” and kindly posed for a quick Instagram picture. The swarm of lovely PR ladies were dressed to colourful perfection in head-to-toe Peter Pilotto, making the ultimate contrast to the forever-in-black FROW figure that is Diane Pernet, who famously raised her eyebrow with a mi-smile when we asked to take her picture. Anna Dello Russo was surprisingly dressed in a rather sober black dress, no head piece – WE REPEAT NO HEAD PIECE. All in all, a rather quiet start to the day.

Here’s what  you need to know about the Peter Pilotto show:

What… Peter Pilotto – design duo with a mastered penchant for print.

Where… The Topshop Showspace, Bedford Square.

Who… The legendary Diane Pernet, the Guardian’s Jess Cartner-Morley, renowned fashion journo Colin McDowell and ex-Grazia come Harvey Nicks Fashion Director, Paula Reed were all there to name but a few, to give their support.

What we loved… The three-dimensional beadwork, voluptuous carnival-style peplums that flounced their way down the catwalk and the gorgeous crescendo of colour merging from monochrome prints and soft lilacs and blues to the punchier print-heavy jewel tones.

Hero piece… The final look: a stunning monochrome dress embellished with intricate bead and mirror detailing- mesmerising!

Hair loving… Low ponytails, slightly backcombed with a strong centre parting, finished with whispers of hair falling loose over the ears.

Beauty notes… Flawless – completely neutral with a hint of smoky brown to the eye, matched with an iridescent glow across the cheeks.

Inspired by… the transition of print with a touch of flamenco merengue (that’s our take anyway!)
