When we’re craving a night of wild dancing with our girlfriends there’s a couple of places us Topshop girls just can’t keep away from and one of our party-perfect spaces of the moment just has to be east London’s XOYO. The off-Shoreditch bar-cum-club reinvented itself last year and has since spent months launching the careers of budding artists – Grimes and Solange – as well as keeping a steadily cool list of DJs on rotate.
So, we’re bursting with excitement at the news Belgium DJ The Magician will be gracing the decks at XOYO this weekend! The Kitsuné prodigy that previously fronted Aeroplane, is now one of the most exciting and mood-lifting DJs on the scene. From Santiago to Moscow, The Magician – or Stephen Fasano as he’s more commonly know – has been traveling the world with his disco-inspired and pop heavy tunes.
We spoke with the magical man of the hour about best gigs and where to hang out when in London.
How would you describe the music you play?
What’s your go to track for a big crowd response?
What’s the most important thing about a gig?
The audience is the most important but also the soundsystem needs to be good and powerful enough to catch the audience and make them dancing.
Why the name, The Magician?
I like playing roles and appropriating myself a whole new world. At the time I created the project, I needed some lightness, humor and magic.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played and why?
It’s hard to pick only one… I remember that club in Los Angeles called “Rhonda”. The temperature was around 40°c with strictly no air, no space to move! Everybody was disguised or weirdly dressed up… I could play what I wanted, the reactions were awesome…
