From store-bought to bespoke, we’re on a mission to bring a little bling to your sneakers! This month, we’re giving you the chance to put a unique twist on your trainers with handmade customization from the lovely folks at Canvas.
From tomorrow until August 8th, the Canvas team will be popping up at our New York store to customise your sneakers in ways you never thought possible. Whether you fancy a sneaker encrusted in gems or a sole painted in vivid colours, this talented bunch will be on hand to make your shoe wishes come true.
The amazingness of Canvas doesn’t end there. Not only is the brand about making your kicks look awesome but the greater mission behind Canvas is a positive one. The project raises funds to support creative art programs in public schools that, “help build self-esteem and nurture optimism.” Quite a task, right? We spoke to the brilliant team behind the brand to tell us a little more…
How did Canvas coming about?
Project C.A.N.V.A.S (CAN Visually Achieve Success) was founded upon the principal that within every person lies a wealth of creativity. It is a project that set out to empower youth and young adults across the world to believe in themselves. People are inspired by Project C.A.N.V.A.S to treat life as a canvas upon which they have the power to create their own masterpiece. We think it offers “blank canvases” on which customers can create their own art, showcasing their uniqueness or leave as the original solid fashion lifestyle shoe.
What’s so unique about Canvas?
Every pair of Project Canvas shoes has a unique paint pattern on it’s sole, making every pair one of a kind. That’s what make the brand physically unique. The wider mission of Project Canvas Brand is to support underfunded programs. We usually partner with a charity local to the event that we are hosting. In NY, we will partner with Urban Arts Partnership. $5,000 from the proceeds of the Project Canvas shop at Topshop will be donated to the organization that supports creative programs and a fine arts High School here in New York City.
Why do you think Canvas fits in with Topshop?
They fit together well because they’re both about finding your uniqueness and your own voice through fashion.
What’s your favourite Canvas product?
Project Canvas offers 4 basic silhouettes: The Primary (lo), our classic, the Primary High our fold-over high top, Palette, our mid lace-up and Blank, our slip on. It’s very difficult to say which is our favorite. Each offers a very distinct style. Some of our favorites are the shoes that were customized. We have a pair that was done by an artist named Persue and that has really colorful character art. It’s very bold and cool. Another favorite is a shoe that Mariah Carey designed for us. The entire pair is covered in Swarovski crystals and she did a cell phone case to match. Every girl’s dream! Sometimes we’re in the mood for simple and clean style and that’s where the uncustomized blank colors come in.
Who can you see wearing Canvas?
Project Canvas is unisex. The solid, vibrant colors and classic styles make them suited for everyone. Celebrities from Justin Bieber to Whoopi Goldberg have worn our shoes.
How do you wear your Canvas?
We’ve worn our Project Canvas with jeans and blazers, sundresses, leather pants. It really just depends on our mood. We have a bunch of different colors and styles that were painted by artist friends of ours and a couple that we did ourselves. We like to play off of the artwork and build the clothing look from our feet up. Spoken like true shoe people, eh?
