“Rebellious school girl. Fresh, easy and cool,” was the key sound bite from Topshop Unique‘s Head of Design Emma Farrow, on the collection that left the audience at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall speechless. A complete U-turn on last season’s hot-hot-hot minimal summer wear, AW14 was made for the achingly cool-girl that was well equipped to face the winter chill. Colours were reminiscent of AW13 show with lemon, cornflower blue and beige popping up, but the focus was all on the detail. Embellishment and opulence was the order of the day, Topshop Unique was no filler, all killer and 100% sumptuous. Can we have it all?
Who… Topshop Unique – that’s us, of course! Our high-fashion line designed by our super talented in-house team and led by uber cool Emma Farrow, with creative direction from the visionary Kate Phelan.
Front row… If there was one thing that was bound to set the Twittersphere chirping, it was the presence of a stellar front row. Our longtime friend and upcoming collaborator Kate Moss brought along her sister and aspiring model, Lottie Moss, who cozied up to Sir Philip Green and fashion legend Anna Wintour. While those all important IT girls: Daisy Lowe, Poppy Delevingne, Harley Viera-Newton, Atlanta de Cadenet and Ashley Madekwe kept the paparazzi lightbulbs flashing. Of course, us Topshop girls are known for our obsession with music, so it was crucial to invite some of the artists we’re most excited about right now, including Danish electro-star Mø and recent Grammy-winner Foxes. Not forgetting the legendary MIA, who pulled up a pew with her son.
The girls on the catwalk… Casting director Rosie Vogel picked out a selection of strong Brit girls to lead the model pack such as Jourdan Dunn, Eliza Cummings, Charlotte Wiggins and Sam Rollinson. We also had our eyes on some fierce newbies such as Binx, Grace Mahary and the star of Celine’s new campaign, Ophelie Guillermand.
In five words…. Tough tomboy gets picture pretty.
Playlist… Pop and serious beats! Jonjo Jury made a mix just for the girls. Peaches kicked it off with Serpentine which segued into MIA, Death in Vegas and Disclosure before exploding into Beyoncé’s epic Run the World, which Ms. Jourdan Dunn mouthed along to backstage!
Hero piece… THE COATS. Okay, so it’s not exactly one piece, but there really were just too many gorgeous options to choose from. Favourites included a metallic khaki puffa, a wide-lapelled blue felt trench and furry floor-length patchwork dress coat.
Inspired by… English heritage, school sports kits and the great outdoors. In fact, if you looked closely enough you could see etiquette quotes such as, “it will be in bad taste,” or “make no apology when you meet your hostess,” embroidered on the surfaces of dresses. Nature was an undeniable influence too, with patterns and prints of ornate garden features, peacocks, roses, snakes and feathers, all designed by the Unique design team.

Don’t Forget… it wasn’t just a classic catwalk for Topshop Unique’s AW14 show. This season we also brought the fashion week experience to all our fabulous fans, who along with some very lucky members of the general public, watched the show from the balcony of the Tate Modern’s gallery mezzanine. As hundreds of fashion devotees and art-goers gazed down on the grand open space, we overheard students from the London College of Fashion waxing lyrical about the “amazing” experience, which Susie Bubble affirmed by tweeting, “what a great idea to have @Topshop Unique open to public @tate!” We think so too, Susie.
The democratisation of the fashion show didn’t end there and four lucky winners were invited into the window of our London Oxford Circus store to watch the show in virtual reality. More to come from the winners’ experience and how our collaboration with Inition panned out, but needless to say what they experienced was very much a world first.
