Tartan’s long been a Topshop favourite, whether it be Alexa-inspired scarves or kilts like the Clueless girls. So we’re happy to see the fabric already making a mark on the AW15 catwalks. But how has it changed? Follow our guide to refreshing your tartan looks for next season.
1. Be a caped crusader
Up-and-comer Danielle Romeril showed at LFW today, with a collection that explored what a dystopian future might look like. Lucky for us, things won’t be too bleak – thanks to her incredibly chic tartan cape. “It’s my favourite look in the collection,” she told us backstage. “I reimagined a quintessential winter fabric in a fresh shape for my future vision.” We say bring on the apocalypse.
2. Team it with top-to-toe black
Alexander Wang went for black, black and more black at New York Fashion Week this season – save for one injection of colour: red tartan. Get the look with a tailored tartan coat, paired with all the black staples in your wardrobe – whether that’s your favourite skinny jeans and a vest, or leather shorts and a sheer shirt.
3. Send it south with tartan trousers
This is how rebel girls do tartan. Fashion critic Tim Blanks described Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier’s latest Marc by Marc Jacobs show as “girl power with balls” – an attitude we could definitely get behind. So channel a bit of ’80s activism in a pair of punk-girl tartan trousers or leggings.
