Feeling cold? Winter may be dragging on with snow and sub zero temperatures, but we’ve noticed a trend emerging for all things tropical. From palm leaf prints to dreamy music and a new craze for Hawaiian food, follow our guide and you’ll feel transported to sunnier shores in no time – even if you can’t afford that trip to the Bahamas.
THE TROPICAL PRINT’S ARE ARRIVING
Tropical references were everywhere on the catwalks – from Erdem’s jungle-themed show to orchid prints at Matthew Williamson. And we want to wear them now. Go for our graphic palm print trousers with a bright knit or our jungle-style pussy bow blouse with black skinnies and boots. Who said winter dressing has to be all black and grey?
MUSIC’S GONE BEACHY
The best way to escape winter blues? Plug in to some of our favourite new artists with tropical sounds. James Vincent McMorrow‘s latest album has been compared to a ‘warm sonic blanket’, while Mac DeMarco‘s dreamy ‘Salad Days’ track will get you looking forward to a sun-filled day at Field Day festival – where it’s just been announced he’ll play this May.
HAWAIIAN FOOD IS IN
Everyone’s talking about POND, a new Hawaain restaurant opened up in London’s Dalston. With a super-slick interior complete with private booths and a cool exposed ceiling, this place is far from any tacky Tiki bar. Cocktail-wise we got in the Hawaain spirit with Dashboard Hulas (like a G+T with lemongrass), plus Lil’ Island Ice Teas made with homemade cola. And the food? As well as delicacies from the island like barbeque smoked pork belly and lake-caught catfish, the menu is packed with Hawaiian speciality spam (yup, spam) – but don’t be put off – we guarantee spam fries will rock your world.
