“Wacky.” “Quirky.” “Off the wall.” These were just three of the ways Marta, one half of the Marques’Almeida duo, described the their AW15 collection. For us it felt like a mash-up of the brand’s greatest hits peppered with some seriously brilliant red fashion herrings. Their signature deconstructed denim jackets went voluminous and edgy with a heavy helping of zips and epic fraying while new looks came in the form of lurid patterned corsets and neck wraps (yes, apparently that’s a thing!) in dark purple and gold. The Marques’Almeida girl, however, remains very much the same, inspired by ’90s fan magazines and photography by Corinne Day. Front row were clearly impressed. Super blogger Susie Lau and BFC ambassador Sarah Mower ran backstage as soon as the last girl left the runway to congratulate the designer pair.
AND ONE MORE THING…
One piece we’d love to get our hands on right now was the soft silver clutch and strap bags made from lamb’s leather, covered in foil. “We’ve been doing well with accessories and we have a lot of fun making them,” said Marta. “Sometimes it about getting a realistic look, so if you wear a pretty dress then you throw a bag on top of it.” Exactly the vibe the Topshop girl likes to go for.
RYAN LO AW15
If we had to guess which designer would be referencing Disney’s Frozen this season we would have placed our bets on Ryan Lo. And we would have been right. The NEWGEN designer – and recent addition to the LVMH shortlist – has been referencing pop culture – everything from Sylvanian Families to Muriel’s Wedding – since his first show with Fashion East. “We ended the show with the big hit Let It Go because I wanted everyone to take risk!” said the designer. The clothes were risky but surprisingly wearable with lace and fur two-piece skirt suits and gorgeous swan-like dresses fit for a modern princess.
AND ONE MORE THING…
The hair and make-up killed it. The beauty looked made us reach for the white eye-liner and stick on lashes! Make-up artist Isamaya French stuck closely to Ryan’s cartoon reference for inspo. “It was frosty snow queen meets a chic Kate Middleton,” said French. “The collection is inspired by this Japanese anime so the lashes were a big focus.” Hair also had total princess vibes with locks amped up with extensions and bold bouncy curls from Tina Outen.
WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT BEING PART OF NEWGEN….
Marta from Marques’Almeida: NEWGEN has just been so amazing for us. It gave us that initial support to help us do what we do. We’re growing now but it has been completely decisive.
Ryan Lo: We couldn’t have done it without them!
