One of our most-played bands of late is undeniably Alabama Shakes. They’re currently mid-way through a mega tour (which now includes a slot on the iconic Pyramid stage at this year’s Glastonbury festival) and play the second weekend of Coachella tomorrow. We caught up with them ahead of their performance to talk life on the road, their much awaited new album ‘Sound & Color’ and find out what songs have been the soundtrack to their summer so far…
What can we expect from this summer’s live shows?
We always give it all we’ve got! We play new and old songs and there are quiet moments and rocking moments. We do our best to show our appreciation for fans spending their time with us.
What’s been your favourite place to play so far?
It’s hard to pick one favourite place, but we once played at the White House and that was pretty surreal. However my ideal place is probably somewhere close to home where I can sleep in my own bed after the show!
What are the inspirations behind the new album ‘Sound & Color’?
We’re inspired by artists such as Prince, Bjork, Gil-Scot Heron, Outkast, the list goes on! But personally we were inspired by our desire to make something new. We wanted to make something that combined our musical interests and at the same time do something new and push things beyond what you hear every day.
What music keeps you going when you’re on the road?
A lot of Bjork and D’Angelo.
