If unlike us you don’t stay up every year to see the Met Ball gowns parade through Instagram we’ve digested the oh-so-fashion event and added our five favourite moments of Met Balls’ past…

Formerly the Costume Institute Gala, the Met Ball is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion wing. It marks the opening of the annual fashion exhibition which this year is China: Through the Looking Glass and is hosted by the iconic editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.

As well as a celebration around the just-launched exhibition, it’s chance for fashion’s biggest designers to dress a very lucky celeb – musician, actress, IT-girl – in a bespoke look and generally show off their amazing threads. Think Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci transforming Beyoncé into a lace and sequin goddess or Miuccia Prada reimagining Lupita Nyong’o into a dazzling Great Gatsby character. A serious excuse to dress to impress!

When Jennifer Lawrence got photo bomb fanatical

For J Law any red carpet event seems to be about having as much fun as possible. At 2013’s Punk theme Met Ball she got up close and personal with SJP and photo-bombed the Sex and the City star in her ornate feathered head piece.

When Jay-Z “proposed” to Bey on the red carpet

Okay, not really but when Beyoncé’s rock fell off her hand there wasn’t some assistant to pick it up but her hubby Jay-Z who found it on the floor and proceeded to hold it out to her on bended knee. Cute or what?

When Katy Perry wore a flashing LED gown

This really needs no explanation. Just pure fashion fun!

When Stella McCartney and Liv Tyler rebelled in matching tanks

We had to have a ’90s pic in here for good measure and who better than two of rock ‘n’ roll’s talented offspring, Stella and Liv, to rebel against fancy fashion. We love this DIY look!

When SJP and Alexander McQueen rocked matching tartan

SJP constantly crushes it at the Met Ball but this 2010 ensemble was really something else. The epic tulle skirt, the ornate corset popping from underneath and those highland style lace up sandals – we give it 5 stars.
