The Most Iconic Couples At The Oscars

On Sunday night, the who’s who of Hollywood is set to gather for the 89th Academy Awards, with La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea possibly being the biggest contenders to take home the golden trophies. Naturally, we’re already pretty excited – not just for the ceremony, but also the red carpet. To help make the wait a lot easier, we’re taking a look back at the most iconic couples to ever grace the Oscars’ red carpet. Keep scrolling for a serious Hollywood throwback…

1. Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow – 1996

You might have forgotten this – but Brad and Gwyneth, who dated from 1994 to 1997, were actually engaged, too! Here they are at the 1996 Oscars.

2. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt – 2000

After calling off the engagement to Gwyn, Brad moved on to Friends star Jennifer Aniston. The ultimate noughties couple attended the Academy Awards together in 2000, the same year they got married.

3. Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams – 2006

The late Heath Ledger was nominated as best actor for his role in Brokeback Mountain in 2006 and accompanied by his then girlfriend Michelle Williams. This year, Michelle is up for Best Supporting Actress in Manchester by the Sea.

4. Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley – 1995

Possibly one of the most iconic red carpet couples ever: Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley (remember Liz’s safety-pin Versace dress?) could not be missed off this list.

5. Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts – 1990

Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts were set to get married in 1991 – but Julia broke off the engagement three days before the wedding. At the 67th Academy Awards they made the picture-perfect couple.

6. Don Gummer and Meryl Streep – 1980

As of this year, Meryl Streep is the record holder for most Oscar nominations of any actor (20!) – and her relationship with sculptor Don Gummer is also pretty record-breaking for Hollywood standards: the couple have been married since 1978.

7. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman – 1991

Nicole Kidman is nominated as best supporting actress for her role in Lion this year; here she is pictured with then husband Tom Cruise in 1991, a year after their wedding.

8. Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon – 2006

In 2006, Reese Witherspoon won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Walk the Line. Her date for the night was actor Ryan Phillippe, who she was married to from 1999 to 2007.

9. Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere – 1991

Nineties supermodel Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere were married for four years, from 1991 to 1995. At the 63rd Academy Awards they were the couple of the moment.

10. Jude Law and Sienna Miller – 2004

Jude Law and Sienna Miller, another of our favourite noughties couples, dated on-off between 2003 and 2011. At the 2004 Oscars, Jude received a Best Actor nod for his role in Cold Mountain.

11. Christian Slater and Winona Ryder – 1989

Yes, Winona Ryder dated Heathers co-star Christian Slater for a while in the eighties, and the pair attended the Oscars together in 1989.

12. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck – 2003

This year it’s all eyes on Ben’s brother Casey, but back in 2003 the world was obsessed with “Bennifer”. We’re still not over it…
