Maya Jama is the 22-year-old you need to know. The reason(s) she’s on our radar? Maya is not only a presenter (she’s worked for MTV, The Brits and just bagged her own prime time show on ITV), Insta-famous (200k followers and counting), but also the girlfriend of grime’s rising star, Stormzy. We chatted to the Bristol-born It girl living in London about her impressive career so far, goals for 2017 and who takes the top spot as her ultimate style icon…
1. How did you get into presenting?
Well, I started working with Jumpoff TV helping around in the office, and eventually they let me use their cameras to make little videos upstairs, and then I became their host for their weekly music video count down, and that was it! I knew it was definitely what I wanted to do forever, but before hand I always knew I wanted to be on the telly.
2. Biggest highlight of your working career so far?
Going to Brazil to cover the world cup for Hyundai and Copa 90 for 2 months – it was my first proper paid job abroad.
3. What was it like working at the Brits this year?
It was really exciting, its been a dream of mine to work with The Brits, and it was also a massive year to get involved in it.
4. Second career choice – what would it be?
Be a bartender and travel and explore the world.
5. Key tips or advice for young people trying to get into this industry?
Don’t be disheartened by no’s, be willing to do a lot of free work, and enjoy the journey because everything you learn at the beginning is what you’ll take with you.
6. Your goals for 2017?
I’ve got some really exciting projects and trips coming up that haven’t been announced yet, but really I just want to keep working hard and to enjoy myself!
7. What is your beauty secret?
Good lighting when taking pictures, and my MAC concealer is a life saver!
8. What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
A good pair of high-wasted black jeans – you can put them with everything and no one knows how many times you’ve worn them in the week because they are black!
9. What influences your style?
The seasons have a massive influence on my style – in summer I’m only ever in dresses and winter I’m in 35 layers.
10. Do you have a style icon?
If there was anyone I could dress like it would be Rihanna – she covers every angle and isn’t afraid to express herself through her style.
