Did you watch the BBC’s Little Women this Christmas? Next to Michael Gambon, Angela Lansbury and Big Little Lies‘ Kathryn Newton, the mini-series introduced Maya Hawke (daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke) in her breakthrough role as Jo March. Famous parents aside, here are five reasons why you should keep an eye on Maya this year…
1. Little Women was just the start…
Her leading role in Little Women actually had nothing to do with her parents – Maya was initially invited to audition for a much smaller role, but begged director Vanessa Caswill to let her read for the role of Jo. “I felt so connected to Jo as a character my whole childhood, so when I got into this project I was like ‘I’m obviously the right person to play this part’,” she shared with us at a press event. Her determination payed off and she is currently working on her first film Ladyworld (2018).
2. She’s already landed a big cover
Maya made the cover of Tatler UK this January – next to Little Women co-star Jonah Hauer-King. We bet there’s many more to come.
3. Her mother’s support
congratulations to my beautiful daughter, Maya-Ray Thurman-Hawke, on her debut, playing Jo March in Little Women with wit and empathy and truth. the @bbc is so blessed to have you, and they were such a perfect place to start. you were the first wonder of my life, and may the world open up to you, and the angels keep you safe. #louisamayalcott #littlewomen #bbc ❤️
Uma Thurman couldn’t stop gushing about her daughter’s debut on Instagram and shared multiple stills of the show along with some super-cute supportive captions. Wouldn’t you love to see mother and daughter in a film together?
4. She’s not your typical celebrity daughter
Despite being the daughter of two huge Hollywood stars, Maya has stayed relatively out of the limelight until she turned 18. Even now her Instagram profile is private, she doesn’t make any of the typical celebrity-offspring headlines and focuses on her acting instead.
5. Designers love her
In 2015, Maya attended the CFDA Fashion Awards as designer Zac Posen’s muse. Now that she’s officially in the public eye, expect to see lots more fashion outings soon…
