Remember we’re hosting a different artist in our Oxford Circus store each week in February to customise your denim? This week, London-based Phiney Pet will be lending her vibrant aesthetic to your new denim purchases. We caught up with her to talk about starting out, her creative process and why Lisa Simpson is her fashion icon…
How did you start out?
Back when I was 18 I was on a path to study law. Right at the last moment I realised that I was certainly no lawyer and followed my real love of designing. I studied Fashion Textiles and have been designing and doing hand work ever since. I have always painted and embroidered directly onto garments – back in school I used to colour in my plimsolls!
Can you describe your creative process?
The process usually starts with a random thought or discovering interesting subject matter. I have a wild imagination so I sometimes have to reign in the idea by sketching and tweaking it. And then I go ahead and paint. Other times if I am painting something with free reign or just for sampling, I go straight onto the garment – my favourite pieces are always the ones I haven’t planned – they end up the craziest!
How would you describe your designs in three words?
Eclectic, colourful, OTT
Who or what inspires you?
People. I am an avid people watcher and love to know what draws human beings to things. Particularly anyone who stands up for something. In this current climate it’s so easy for people to remain silent. People who are out there fighting for race, gender, equality, the planet… that’s inspiration right there. I always try to put messages within my work, sometimes subtle and other times right in your face.
What’s been your career highlight to date?
This is such a tough one, I have had so many moments that I’ve treasured. Probably a couple of the big collaborations I have done like Pingu – they were the hardest projects but so rewarding to see the work pay off.
What advice would you give other female creatives?
Trust your judgement; it is totally natural to doubt yourself; originality comes from being true to you; don’t be afraid to recognise where you went wrong, it will make you a much better creative; when anyone says you “can’t” do something pretend they said you can – makes for a much more positive work mindset and who doesn’t love to prove someone wrong?!
Who is the ultimate Phiney Pet girl?
The Phiney Pet girl (or guy, knows who they are!) has their own sense of style and doesn’t care what anyone thinks of them. They are independent babes and the stand for what they believe in!
Who would you love to see in one of your designs?
I love seeing anyone who owns it and owns who they are – but Solange, SZA, Kehlani, Sade and Debbie Harry are my ultimate girl crushes. Oh and Lisa Simpson if they would let me do an animated version!
Who are your denim style icons?
Dolly Parton, Britney & Justin and definitely Aaliyah. They’ve all had some iconic demin moments.
What’s next for 2018?
Plenty of exciting projects and working with some awesome people. 2018 is all about working together.
