What’s your favourite part of Christmas?

Full disclosure, I didn’t grow up really celebrating Christmas - my mom is a Baha’i and my dad is Japanese. In Japan they celebrate with kurisumasu keiki - a white frosted layer cake with red strawberries on top! I used to feel a bit left out when all the kids would be talking about the tree and all the swag they were going to get. I had mixed feelings about Christmas because it reminded me that I was different, that I didn’t totally belong.

My mom compensated by getting us to be winter festivity experimentalists. One year I remember a blur of big, round voices singing songs in Swahili for Kwanzaa and hot-glue gunning cornucopia-like arrangements of paper gourds and apples into baskets to put on the mantle. Another year we got gnomey with the Swedes. Another year we went to the Lutheran Church to pack up Christmas care boxes - tinned pineapple going plunk plunk plunk one at a time into cardboard boxes.

What do you do on Christmas Eve?

Christmas Eve usually involves a lot of eating, late-night giggly last-minute present wrapping and editing video into the wee hours - we’ve been doing a Christmas music video as a tradition now for the past few years. My sister is an artist and in a band. She does a lot of animation in her work, so now the annual video gets pretty elaborate. We start writing the lyrics together around Halloween, record the song in the studio beforehand, then film during the holiday period. Friends will send in cameo clips.

What does Christmas Day look like for you? Do you dress up or down?

I’m now with an English man who has very hard-core traditional Christmases with all the trimmings. I’m learning how to get down with all the customs that cannot change because that’s just the way they are and will always be! We usually spend a good part of the day in pyjamas. Then it’s over the river and through the woods to granny’s house we go - changed into my finest woollens!

What’s your Boxing Day routine?

Since I’ve moved to England, Boxing Day is all about the traditional country walk. Getting wrapped up in the freezing cold, having a nip of a warming drink and a lukewarm sausage. I love seeing all the people turned out in their coats with their red cheeks, Jack Frost making the grass crispy underfoot.

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

I’m still wishing for world peace. I eventually got the Lil Miss singing mermaid and she wasn’t that satisfying.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

The best gift I’ve ever given someone was a window. My mom had just moved into a new house and didn’t get enough light in her room. I gave her a big wide-open window and now every day she can look outside at the trees and get woken up by the sunshine and breathe in the fresh air.

What’s your wish for the future?

I wish we could focus as much on our peace of mind, our internal wellbeing as we do on our material progress and social status. Intrinsic happiness has such a delicious slow-burning glow compared to extrinsic validation.

What’s your favourite part of Christmas?

That I get to spend time with my whole family. We hang out together and have a great time!

What do you do on Christmas Eve?

Usually we meet up at my grandparents’ place to have a nice dinner that everyone helps to prepare. After the meal, we sit together at the Christmas tree, unwrap the presents and sing some Christmas songs - I’m not the biggest fan of this routine, but my family love our traditional German carols. We also eat lots of Christmas sweets and catch up on what everyone has been doing.

What does Christmas Day look like for you? Do you dress up or down?

On Christmas Day we go out for a walk and the feast continues at my grandparents’ place. The big celebration is on Christmas Eve, so I always dress up in something like a velvet suit and some black heels; Christmas day is far more dressed down.

What’s your Boxing Day routine?

Gia and I used to spend every Boxing Day evening together eating pizza at a place in our hometown. We mostly see our old friends and meet up for drinks, but this year the whole family is going to Kitzbühel so we’ll be skiing in the Austrian mountains.

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

Last year it was simply coming home for Christmas - I was sick in hospital and wasn’t sure how long I had to stay there. It definitely made me realize that material gifts aren’t as important as spending time with the ones you love!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

The best gifts are always the personal ones! My grandpa only wants dark chocolate at Christmas, strictly prohibiting us from giving him any other material gifts. So we write him letters to thank him for always being there for us.

What’s your wish for the future?

That everyone I love stays healthy and happy. And that I achieve my own personal goals, like studying for my masters in London.

What’s your favourite part of Christmas?

I love Christmas because it is the time of the year that I get to go back to my hometown, celebrate with my family and see old friends. Plus, I love it when it's cold outside and you can just stay home and be cosy. There’s also the smell of food cooking everywhere!

What do you do on Christmas Eve?

My family and I start the day with a long breakfast - we stay in our most comfy pyjamas the whole day! We all dress up to go to Church in the evening and then take a nice long walk home where we have our Christmas dinner and hand out the presents!

What does Christmas Day look like for you? Do you dress up or down?

It’s pretty relaxed - we all sit together in the living room, talk and enjoy our time together.

What’s your favourite part of Christmas?

The dark nights and London’s Christmas lights, my electric blanket and Jack Guinness’s Christmas party!

What do you do on Christmas Eve?

Christmas is always such a busy period for me with work because the music industry is all promo at that time of year. I’m always so last-minute. This is so bad, but I always do all my shopping AND wrapping on Christmas Eve… Oops! Obviously it’s an early night for the kids - sneaking the stocking into the bedroom is my favourite bit.

What does Christmas Day look like for you? Do you dress up or down?

I’m a cringe mum on Christmas Day to make it more fun for my daughter Lux - Christmas jumper, the socks, all of it! We always go to the pub for our roast so I cannot get away with slobbing it.

What’s your Boxing Day routine?

My little girl’s dad takes her on Boxing Day, so every year for the past four years I’ve run off to the sun! I’m going to Marrakesh this year for the first time and I can’t wait.

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

When me and my sister were 11, we got a puppy. Don’t know what can ever top that!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

I’m everyone’s favourite gift giver because I receive so much free make-up and I save loads up for Christmas presents. Everyone always knows what they’re getting, but they always say it’s their favourite present. I’m very popular with the teenage girls in the family!

What’s your wish for the future?

For my little girl Lux to believe in Santa for a couple more years. I use it to do deals with her the whole year round!
