Introducing Our Christmas Song

This year, we brought together four emerging female artists to rework Rose Royce’s classic “Wishing on a Star” as our Topshop Christmas song. In the music video, Sigrid, Okay Kaya, Nadia Rose and Sonia Ben Ammar each put their own unique spin on the festive track. Watch the full video below, and keep reading to find out what the industry’s brightest new stars are wishing for this Christmas…

Okay Kaya

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

I have five brothers, so the year I got to put the star on top of the Christmas tree was pretty special. That was MY Christmas.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

I’m pretty good at gifting and listening to what people wish for – but it’s always stuff that I like myself and think everyone should own.

What’s your favourite Christmas party outfit?

My good friend is a tailor and made me this suit three years ago – suits are pretty much all I ever wear if I dress up.

What’s the song that inspired you to make music?

The first time I heard Otis Redding sing “These Arms Of Mine” – it’s my favourite song.

What’s your party anthem?

It depends where I go, but the last concert I saw was the Swedish Hip Hop singer Yung Lean – I felt like I was 14 again!

What’s your wish for the future?

I guess it would be to make more visuals and videos for my music.

Sigrid

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

Christmas is really important for my family because it’s the time of the year we all come together. I have two older siblings studying abroad, so it’s nice to get everyone together.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

One Christmas I surprised my sister in Amsterdam – she thought we were going to meet back home in Norway a few days later but I met her at the airport there and it was so special.

What’s your favourite Christmas party outfit?

A lot of people in Norway actually wear traditional Norwegian clothes on Christmas – it’s a huge woollen dress. I usually just wear a normal party dress, with something that has room for eating. The food is the best thing about Christmas!

What’s the song that inspired you to make music?

I remember listening to Joni Mitchell and Neil Young growing up because my parents are huge fans. Later I discovered Coldplay and Adele, and that’s when my interest in pop music and song writing started. “Rolling in the deep” by Adele is one of the biggest reasons I make pop music. That chorus just hit me and made me realise that music is my thing.

What’s your party anthem?

Anything by the Norwegian punk band LÜT, Skepta, Stormzy or “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn.

What’s your wish for the future?

I just hope that people are going to have a nice year. I am very happy with my life at the moment so I want the people around me to be happy, too. Oh, and I really hope I get a cat…

Nadia Rose

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

My mum usually works Christmas – she’s a nurse – so one Christmas I wasn’t expecting her there and she came home nice and early.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

My little brother has decided he wants to go into media and videography, so I bought him a pretty sick drone that he hasn’t stopped using since.

What’s your favourite Christmas party outfit?

I usually like to show a bit of leg, so some short shorts and a cute top. Also a cool jacket that I can pop off once I step in the room.

What’s the song that inspired you to make music?

The Spice Girls heavily inspired me – “Spice Up Your Life” really touched me when I was younger.

What’s your party anthem?

Kia – “My neck, my back”.

What’s your wish for the future?

I want there to be unity and equality in the world.

Sonia Ben Ammar

What’s the biggest wish that ever came true for you on Christmas?

When I shot for Vogue for the first time.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone?

My love.

What’s your favourite Christmas party outfit?

I always wear a dress – usually a flared velvet one. Then I add some funky tights and some high-heeled boots.

What’s the song that inspired you to make music?

Two things. One is the ABBA Gold album. I listened to that all the time and it made me want to sing. The second is “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson.

What’s your party anthem?

If I go to a club, it’s usually rap or electronic dance music – a little Calvin Harris.

What’s your wish for the future?

To never give up on what I’ve always wanted to do and to be happy doing it. I never not want to be making music. There’s many jobs that might be easier to achieve and will probably make you more money, but this is just something that I have to and want to do. It’s about staying passionate.
