The Girls At Topshop HQ Reveal Their Summer Workwear Secrets

Dressing for summer weekends is simple – throw on a breezy dress with some sandals and you’re good to go. Dressing for work in summer…not so much. With the hot commute (we can barely cope with the sauna that is the London Underground), the arctic office air-con and the work-appropriate dress-code to consider, it’s a real sartorial dilemma. Don’t despair, we spoke to the style guru’s at Topshop HQ to find out their tips and tricks to navigating summer workwear…

‘I’m not a big fan of carrying a big tote bag to work, just to be able to bring in a lunch box – especially when the commute is hot and sticky. So instead I always wrap a square scarf around my lunch box and tie the ends together in a loop at the top – it looks like a cute mini bag and is easy to carry – plus you won’t have to look at the contents of your Tupperware all day!’

Emma Shepherd – Marketing Manager

“I am a bit of a tomboy so I find summer a struggle as I’m not huge on dresses!  My go-to for an easy and versatile summer office look is an oversized white shirt twinned with a track pant (super comfy for the sweaty commute). I elevate the look with a pair of statement earrings and a heel.  When I’m not wearing that, I live in slouchy motif tees – a tailored trouser is an easy way to dress them up for the office.”

“My go-to when it comes to summer workwear is a loose-fitting, midi dress which doesn’t cling to the body and keeps you cool when getting on the hot tube at the end of the day. There are so many cute smock styles out at the moment, too! To avoid feeling too cold in the office, I always throw on a blazer which is perfect for a smarter office dress code.”

Anastasia Kornitschuk – CRM Co-Ordinator

“Being someone who goes to the gym before work every morning I always need to pack my bag the night before which means I need to have my outfit prepared as I can’t spend forever in the morning deciding what to wear. I always try and pack something that is easy to throw on, comfortable and that won’t crease in my gym bag! My favourite options at the moment are a simple tea dress with trainers, anything linen or a flowy midi skirt with a cropped t-shirt. For those cooler summer days you can always find me in jeans and a simple top with my leather jacket in hand.”

“A white shirt might be an obvious workwear choice but if you go for an oversized shape it’s comfortable, smart and can look super edgy too. I wear my shirt as a dress, normally with cycling shorts underneath, and combine it with a colour-pop pair of heeled sandals, some cool jewellery and a statement handbag.”

Yasmine Kennedy – Digital Editorial Assistant

“In summer, nothing beats a satin midi dress paired with a t-shirt and trainers. A nice dress is always smart and easy to throw on in the morning but a t-shirt (tied in a knot at the front) is a cool addition if you feel like your strappy, slip dress is too revealing for the office. Plus, it helps with the blasting air con! Then, if I’m heading out to after-work drinks or evening dinner plans I just take the t-shirt off and I’m good to go…”

“During summer, I think the key is opting for light materials and earthy tones. I love the utilitarian trend which is so big this summer so I wear a lot of a shirt dresses: they feel professional, they’re super airy (perfect for the commute!) and they cover your shoulders which stops the office air-con feeling too chilly.”
