Binged all of Normal People in one day and now not sure what to do with yourself? Us too. Based on the book by Sally Rooney, the hit BBC three series has stolen just about everyone’s hearts and after being left wanting so much more by episode twelve (no spoilers), we wanted to find a way to hold on to the show for a little longer. Since Marianne’s style seriously evolves as soon as she ditches the school uniform and finds herself at university, we thought what could be more fitting than rounding up five pieces you need to master her wardrobe yourself. Think summer dresses, maxi lengths and rich colour tones to get her look…
1. Summer dresses
In perhaps our most favourite part from the series, when Marianne heads to Italy for a friends holiday, she develops quite the liking for breezy summer dresses. They fit in perfectly with her nonchalant style and are exactly what we’re longing for in our own wardrobes right now. Opt for loose fitting silhouettes and light fabrics to really get this one right.
2. Sheer and satin fabrications
Whether at a house party, for a trip to the pub or just a library session, sheer fabrications and satins are a Marianne staple. We mostly see her rock this style in the form of blouses and shirts, which she often pairs with something a little more opaque underneath. But, a cute bralet or crop top work well for this too.
3. Rich colour tones
Marianne’s favourite colour palette consists of rich jewel tones – think teal, navy and burgundy. Incorporate these into your wardrobe on any item – from coats to accessories – and don’t be afraid to try a head-to-toe tonal look when channelling this aspect of her style.
4. Midi and maxi lengths
Flowy midi and maxi length skirts and dresses make up a big chunk of Marianne’s wardrobe and luckily, we’ve got plenty of options that look almost identical to hers in the show. Need more convincing? Marianne makes a strong case for the fact that they work any season, by wearing them to Christmas trips and eating ice cream on a summer holiday alike.
5. Ankle boots
Marianne switches up her footwear quite a lot throughout the season but her most consistent shoe of choice is the classic ankle boot. And don’t think these need to be ditched now that the weather is a bit warmer – we can imagine Marianne pairing hers with all sorts of summer outfits for a cool-girl edge.
